Pontificia Universidad Javeriana⁣

Founded in 1623, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, with a campus in Cali since 1970, stands out for its commitment to ecological and environmental policies. Recognized by THE Impact Ranking 2024 as the most committed university to the SDGs in Colombia for the third consecutive year, Javeriana is known for its academic excellence and social impact. In Cali, it hosts two high-impact institutes: the Ómicas Institute, focused on genetic science and technology for food security, and the Institute of Intercultural Studies, facilitating dialogue for social construction and peace.⁣

Foodomics

* This topic is related to COP16 goals 8, 10, 11, 13 and 20.

Molecular Characterization of Global Food Biodiversity, considering genetic, species and ecosystem diversity, together with its impact on nutrition and health, is a universal challenge. We combine advanced techniques in genomics, transcriptomics, lipidomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and bioinformatics to analyze data and obtain a comprehensive view of the relationship between molecular structure and composition with biological function. This allows cataloging the genetic variability of plants and animals, improving their adaptation through selection or genetic editing, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, developing new food products, personalizing diets and identifying valuable molecular compounds to solve problems in health, industry and agriculture. We contribute to food security and sustainable food production with a minimal environmental footprint.

Ecological Restoration

* This topic is related to COP16 goals 2, 4, 8, 9, 10, 14 and 16.

Committed to the encyclical “Laudato Si’” by Papa Francisco, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali promotes the conservation and sustainability of biodiversity through integrated approaches that combine ecological restoration, climate change adaptation, and sustainable use of biological resources, both on campus and in research initiatives. These initiatives feature innovative projects in coral reef restoration, monitoring of Andean ecosystems in response to climatic impacts, and agroecological experiences focusing on microorganisms and their interactions with plants. Additionally, the research explores the genetic mechanisms driving the evolution of plant structures, providing insights for species conservation and adaptation. This interdisciplinary work connects advanced science with traditional knowledge in a dialogue of understanding that contributes to the responsible management and care of biodiversity.

Success story

Research

The Omics Sciences Research Institute – iÓMICAS, was born from the Alianza Ómicas (Colombian Scientific Ecosystem) and addresses global challenges of food security, sustainable productivity and health, funded by several global institutions. It is a center of excellence (the only one in South America) of the Periodic Table of Foods Initiative, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, contributing to food security with the molecular characterization of foods in the world and the region.
